Stay at Longlands

A whole estate, or a single cottage

Longlands is a place to gather. Build the year around a wedding anniversary, a milestone birthday, a Christmas with three generations under one roof — or simply unhook for a quiet week in one of the courtyard cottages. The main house and its eight cottages can be booked individually, or taken together to host a party of up to forty.

The estate sits in its own grounds one mile from Cartmel village, with the Lake District fells on the horizon and the Cartmel Valley spread out below. It is dog-friendly, self-catering, and quietly looked after.

The Estate & Grounds

Built in 1810. Lived in ever since.

The main house was built as a Georgian country residence and, in its earliest days, was known as Langlands. Behind it, a secluded courtyard of outbuildings — once full of dairymaids, gardeners and gamekeepers — has been carefully converted into the cottages you see today, while keeping their stone-walled, slate-roofed character.

The estate sits in its own fields and parkland at the foot of Hampsfell, with long views across the Cartmel Valley. Lawns, walled gardens and quiet paths wind between the buildings. There is room to breathe.

Location

One mile from Cartmel village

Cartmel is one of the most loved villages in the Southern Lake District — a cobbled square, a 12th-century priory, a steeplechase racecourse, and a remarkable density of good places to eat (including Simon Rogan's three-Michelin-starred L'Enclume). The village is also the home of sticky toffee pudding.

Walking on Hampsfell starts at the gate — the photograph opposite is the summit marker, listing the distances to the fells and landmarks visible from above the estate. Horse-riding, fishing, cycling and water sports are all within easy reach, as is Holker Hall and the Cartmel Peninsula's beaches.
